Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", although this isnad is da'if (weak) because of a break in it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The break is that) Zufar bin Wathimah's meeting with Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established; and (the narrator) Zuhayr bin Hunayd had a group narrate from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his "al-Thiqat", and he has also been corroborated.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also recorded by Abu Dawud (4490) via Sadaqah bin Khalid, from Muhammad bin Abd Allah al-Shu'aythi al-Nasri, with this same isnad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad 24/ (15580) from Hajjaj bin Muhammad, from Muhammad al-Shu'aythi, as mawquf (as the statement of the Companion).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad (15579) via Waki' (bin al-Jarrah), from Muhammad al-Shu'aythi, from al-Abbas bin Abd al-Rahman al-Madani, from Hakim (bin Hizam), as marfu' (as a saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the first part of the hadith, the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) serves as a shahid (supporting report); it is found in Abu Dawud (1079), Ibn Majah (749) and (766), al-Tirmidhi (322) and al-Nasa'i (796) and (9930), and its isnad is hasan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And for the second part of the hadith, the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which passed earlier as number (8303), is a supporting report, and we mentioned its supporting reports there.
General principle: Al-Bayhaqi says in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 2/ 448: We see no harm in reciting, whether in the mosque or elsewhere, poetry such as what Hassan (bin Thabit) (may Allah be pleased with him) used to compose in defence of Islam and its people. The first hadith (i.e. the hadith under discussion, which contains the prohibition) concerns the poems of the Jahiliyyah and other speech that is not befitting the mosque. And success is from Allah.
