Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi", whereas this chain is weak, because there is weakness in Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil and he was inconsistent in this chain, as will come; moreover, Aqil the mawla of Ibn Abbas is "majhul". Despite this, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar graded its chain as hasan in "Fath al-Bari" (20/170).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over this chain among those narrating from Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil: Mu'afa bin Sulayman narrated it, as in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration here; Mu'alla bin Mansur al-Razi narrated it, as in the next narration with the author and others; and Abd al-Ghaffar bin Dawud Abu Salih al-Harrani narrated it, as in Tammam's "al-Fawa'id" (490). All three of them (Mu'afa, Mu'alla, Abd al-Ghaffar) narrate it from Musa bin A'yan, from Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, from Sulayman bin Yasar, from Aqil the mawla of Ibn Abbas, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Imam al-Bukhari mentioned in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/54) that the narration of Abd al-Ghaffar bin Dawud al-Harrani from Musa bin A'yan, from Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, from Sulayman bin Yasar, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari does not contain the intermediary of Aqil the mawla of Ibn Abbas (between Sulayman and Abu Musa).
Details of the narration: Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik al-Harrani narrated it, in Musnad Ahmad (32/19559), from Musa bin A'yan, from Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, from "a man", from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. So he made the intermediary between the two a single one, left him unnamed ("a man"), and dropped the other.
Details of the narration: Ubayd Allah bin Amr narrated it, in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (919), from Ibn Aqil, from Ali bin al-Husayn, from Abu Rafi'. So he made it a hadith of Abu Rafi'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is broken (munqati'), because Ali bin al-Husayn (Zayn al-Abidin) was born in 33 AH, and Abu Rafi' died shortly after the killing of Uthman, i.e., between 35 and 36 AH (so hearing from him is not possible). Despite this, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain "jayyid" (good) in "al-Fath" (20/170).
Details of the narration: It will come later from the hadith of Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) at number (8264).
Details of the narration: A similar narration from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed earlier at numbers (8257) and (8258).
Note / Clarification: The word "fuqm", read "fuqm" or "faqm" (with dammah or fathah): it means the jaw. What is meant is whoever guards his tongue.
