It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I were to see a man with my wife, I would strike him with the sword, not with its flat side but with its edge. When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you amazed at Sa'd's protective jealousy? By Allah! I have more protective jealousy than he, and Allah has more than I. Because of this very jealousy of Allah, He has forbidden all shameful deeds, whether open or hidden. No one has more protective jealousy than Allah, and no one loves excuse (the servant's repentance) more than Allah; for that reason He sent the messengers as bearers of good news and as warners. And no one loves praise of Himself more than Allah; for that reason He promised Paradise."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1) في النسخ بياض قدر، كلمة، ومكانه في (ك): أبيه، وكلام المصنف عقب الحديث السابق يقتضي عدمَه، لأنه قال عن رواية أبي عوانة أتى بالمتن على وجهه ووجهه كما رواه الناس بلفظ: لو رأيت رجلًا مع امرأتي، كما سيأتي في التخريج. Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts there is a blank space the size of one word, and in manuscript (K) in its place is written "abihi" (his father). But the author's words after the previous hadith require that this word (abihi) be absent, because he said about Abu Awanah's narration that he brought the text in its correct form, which is how people narrated it, with the wording: "If I saw a man with my wife", as will come in the sources.
(2) إسناده صحيح. Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih. وأخرجه أحمد 30/ (18168) عن أبي الوليد هشام بن عبد الملك، بهذا الإسناد. ولفظه: لو رأيت رجلًا مع امرأتي لضربته بالسيف. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (30/18168) narrated it from Abu al-Walid Hisham bin Abd al-Malik, with this same chain. And his wording is: "If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him with the sword." وكذلك أخرجه البخاري (6846) و (7416)، ومسلم (1499)، وعبد الله بن أحمد في زوائده على "المسند" (18169)، وابن حبان (5773) من طرق عن أبي عوانة الوضاح اليشكري، به. Reference / Source: Likewise Imam al-Bukhari (6846, 7416), Muslim (1499), Abd Allah bin Ahmad in his additions (zawa'id) to "al-Musnad" (18169) and Ibn Hibban (5773) narrated it through various routes from Abu Awanah al-Waddah al-Yashkuri (with this same chain). قوله: "غير مصفح" بضم الميم وسكون الصاد المهملة وفتح الفاء وكسرها، أي: غير ضارب بعَرْضه، بل بحدِّه للقتل والإهلاك، لا بعَرْضه للزجر والإرهاب، قال القاضي عياض: فمن فتح جعله وصفًا للسيف وحالًا منه، ومن كسر جعله وصفًا للضارب وحالًا منه. قاله القسطلاني في "شرح البخاري". Note / Clarification: The word "ghayr musfah" is with dammah on the mim, sukun on the unpointed sad, and fathah or kasrah on the fa'. It means: not striking with the flat side of the sword, but rather striking with its edge in order to kill and destroy, not with its flat side in order to rebuke and frighten. Al-Qadi Iyad says: Whoever read the fa' with fathah made it a description of the sword and a circumstantial phrase (hal) relating to it, and whoever read it with kasrah made it a description of the striker and a circumstantial phrase relating to him. Al-Qastallani said this in "Sharh al-Bukhari".
