Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8259

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man who used to go to his father's wife was mentioned to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: If I had found him, I would have struck him with my sword. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have more protective jealousy (ghayrah) than Sa'd, and Allah has more protective jealousy than I. No one loves excuse (repentance and apology) more than Allah; for that reason He sent the messengers. And no one loves praise of Himself more than Allah; for that reason He promised Paradise."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), and Imam Abu Awanah explicitly named this client (mawla) of al-Mughirah in his narration and brought the text in its proper form.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction: This (text) had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have established it from the source works.

Note / Clarification: (2) In our manuscripts the word is "rajulan", whereas the correct and standard form (al-jaddah) is what we have established in the text.

Grading: (3) This hadith is "sahih", but with the wording "imra'at al-rajul" (the man's wife), not "imra'at abihi" (his father's wife). There is no harm in the narrators of this chain.
Details of the narration: We have not found the wording that the author (al-Hakim) cited with anyone other than him, nor have we come across it via Isra'il (who is Ibn Yunus al-Sabi'i). In the next narration this hadith will come via Abu Awanah al-Waddah al-Yashkuri.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1499) narrated it via Za'idah bin Qudamah, from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr, with this same chain. For its wording he referred to the preceding narration, whose wording is: "If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him with the sword."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim's counting this hadith as an addition (istidrak) to the Sahih is an oversight on his part, unless he meant the specific wording that he cited, namely "imra'at abihi" (his father's wife). And Allah knows best.
