Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction: In the manuscripts the words were "thumma qul: ma kuntu la-ajid", whereas what we have established is taken from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" and the source works.
Grading: A sahih report.
Technical note: The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but there is disagreement over it among those narrating from Amr bin Murrah, as will come.
Identification of narrators: "Abu Mu'awiyah" is "Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir", and the name of "Abu Barzah" is "Nadlah bin Ubayd".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Diyat" (p. 118), al-Marwazi in "Musnad Abi Bakr" (68), al-Nasa'i (3521) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (12/407-408), via Abu Mu'awiyah, with this same chain.
Corroboration: On this chain, Abu Mu'awiyah was also corroborated by "Muhammad bin Fudayl" (as al-Bukhari mentioned in "al-Tarikh" 5/196) and by "Muhammad bin Anas" (as Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned in "al-Ilal" 1347).
Statement of al-Bukhari: Imam al-Bukhari said: (The mention of) Salim in it is not sound.
Variation in the chains: A group contradicted Abu Mu'awiyah and Muhammad bin Anas, among them: Ya'la bin Ubayd (in al-Humaydi: 6, al-Nasa'i: 3522, and Ibn Abi Asim: p. 118), Abu Awanah al-Waddah al-Yashkuri (in al-Nasa'i: 3523), Abd Allah bin Numayr (in Ibn Abi Asim: p. 118), and Hafs bin Ghiyath and Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad (in al-Tahawi: 12/408 and 408-409). All of them narrated it from Sulayman al-A'mash, from Amr bin Murrah, from Abu al-Bakhtari, from Abu Barzah. They put "Abu al-Bakhtari Sa'id bin Fayruz" in place of "Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd".
The preferred view: This is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version in the narration of al-A'mash from Amr bin Murrah. Abu Zur'ah said (as found in "al-Ilal" 1347): "The correct version of the hadith of al-A'mash from Amr bin Murrah is 'from Abu al-Bakhtari'." Al-Nasa'i said: "This is closer to being correct." And al-Bukhari's statement in "al-Tarikh", "Salim and Abu al-Bakhtari in it are not sound", means that the hadith is not authentically established from Abu Barzah via either of them.
Further variation: Zayd bin Abi Unaysah contradicted al-A'mash (in Ibn Abi Asim: p. 118 and al-Nasa'i: 3524): he narrated it from Amr bin Murrah, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Barzah. Al-Nasa'i said after it: "This is a mistake; the correct one is 'Abu Nasr'."
Reference / Source: Then al-Nasa'i (3525) and al-Marwazi (67) narrated it via Shu'bah, from Amr bin Murrah, from "Abu Nasr", from Abu Barzah. In al-Marwazi's narration, Abu Nasr is named "Humayd bin Hilal". Al-Nasa'i said: "Abu Nasr is Humayd bin Hilal, and Yunus bin Ubayd narrated it from him with a connected chain (musnad)."
Sources of Yunus's route: This route of Yunus bin Ubayd was narrated by Ahmad (1/61), Abu Dawud (4363), Ibn Abi Asim (p. 118), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (49 and 1/197), al-Nasa'i (3526) and Abu Ya'la (79), via Yazid bin Zuray', from Yunus, from Humayd bin Hilal, from "Abd Allah bin Mutarrif bin al-Shikhkhir", from Abu Barzah. Yunus connected the chain by mentioning "Abd Allah bin Mutarrif" between Humayd and Abu Barzah.
Authentication: Al-Nasa'i said: "This is the best and finest of these hadiths." Likewise Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim also declared this route correct (al-Ilal: 1343, 1347). Al-Bazzar said: "We do not know this hadith to be narrated except from Abu Barzah, from Abu Bakr; it has many routes from Abu Barzah, and this route is among the best routes narrated from Abu Barzah."
Technical objection: However, the narration of Yazid bin Zuray' is disturbed by the contradiction of "Hammad bin Salamah", for Hammad (according to Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Ilal" 1343) narrated it from Yunus bin Ubayd, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abu Barzah, dropping the intermediary (Abd Allah bin Mutarrif). Thus it became like Shu'bah's narration (from Amr bin Murrah, from Humayd, from Abu Barzah). And in Sunan Abi Dawud (4363) the narration of Hammad bin Salamah occurs as "from Yunus, from Humayd, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)" (mursal)!
Conclusion of the analysis: Likewise, like Hammad and Shu'bah, Sulayman bin al-Mughirah also did not mention the intermediary, as Ibn Abi Asim (p. 118) narrated through Hudbah bin Khalid from him, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abu Barzah. So these are three great huffaz (Hammad, Shu'bah, Sulayman); we do not think the narration of Yazid bin Zuray' outweighs theirs, and Allah knows best.
