It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "It is hoped that Allah Almighty will forgive every sin except that of a man who dies in a state of shirk (associating partners with Allah), or who kills a believer deliberately."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
Manuscript variants: In the manuscripts the name is corrupted into "Abd Allah", and the entire hadith is missing from manuscript (B).
Manuscript variants: In the manuscripts the name is corrupted into "Muhammad bin Ahmad".
Grading of the chain: Its chain is sahih. The name of (the narrator) Ibn Abi Zakariyya is "Abd Allah". Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (5980) narrated it via Hisham bin Ammar, from Sadaqah bin Khalid, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4270) narrated it via Muhammad bin Shu'ayb, from Khalid bin Dihqan, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4270) also recorded, through the same route, the hadith of Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'": "The believer continues to move briskly (light and righteous) so long as he does not shed unlawful blood; when he sheds unlawful blood, he becomes exhausted and stops (i.e., is ruined)." Linguistic note: "ballaha" means: he was cut off (came to a halt). The author of "al-Nihayah" (Ibn al-Athir) says that what is meant is falling into ruin by shedding unlawful blood.
