Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 823

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Fajr prayer and then asked (about some hypocrites who were not present): "Is so-and-so present?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These two prayers (Isha and Fajr) are the heaviest prayers upon the hypocrites. If they knew what (reward) is in them, they would surely come to them even if they had to crawl." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to the first row, for it is like the row of the angels, and if you knew its virtue, you would race one another for it." And he said: "Your prayer with one man is better than your praying alone, and your prayer with two men is better than your prayer with one man, and the greater the number (of those praying), the more beloved it is to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
Imam al-Hakim says that the eminent students of Shu'bah narrated it in this way.

Grading: This is a "hasan hadith". Abd Allah bin Abi Basir is a Tabi'i from whom only Abu Ishaq narrated, but Ibn Hibban and al-Ijli declared him trustworthy.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His father Abu Basir corroborated him, as will come in the narrations of Shu'bah (numbers 828-830). Several imams declared it sahih; Ibn al-Mulaqqin quoted its authentication from al-Uqayli and himself also declared it sahih. Abu Ishaq refers to Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/21265), Abu Dawud (554) and Ibn Hibban (2056) narrated it by various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying from "These two prayers (Isha and Fajr)" up to "you would have hastened to them" is supported by the narrations of Abu Hurayrah (al-Bukhari 615, Muslim 437 and others).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Your prayer with one man is better than praying alone" is supported by the hadith of Qabath bin Ashyam (number 6771).
General principle: Several Companions narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "prayer in congregation is superior to prayer alone by 25 or 27 degrees" (al-Bukhari 645, Muslim 649).
