It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: This verse was revealed concerning us: "And blood relatives are more entitled to one another (than others) in the Book of Allah" [Surah al-Ahzab: 6]. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had established brotherhood between a man of the Muhajirun and a man of the Ansar, so I had no doubt that if Ka'b died and had no heir, we would inherit from one another. I thought that I would inherit from him, and if I died, he would inherit from me, until this verse was revealed: "And blood relatives are more entitled to one another."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Ibn Abi al-Zinad ('Abd al-Rahman). Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 394), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (981), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (5/ 1742) and al-Daraqutni in his "Sunan" (4158) via various routes from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad with this same chain. Al-Bazzar's narration is abridged; only Ibn Abi Hatim's narration has "'Urwah, from al-Zubayr", while the form of the other narrations is "mursal". Al-Bazzar said: "We do not know anyone who narrated this hadith from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, except Ibn Abi al-Zinad!" Corroborating chains and supporting reports: I (the editor) say: Ibn Abi al-Zinad was corroborated by Hammad bin Salamah, in what Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis narrated in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (2845), al-Rafi'i in "Tarikh Qazwin" (4/ 194) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (50/ 187) via two routes from Hammad bin Salamah, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father. (8200). Note / Clarification: And see the previous hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) at number (8200). Note / Clarification: The Ka'b mentioned is "Ka'b bin Malik" (may Allah be pleased with him), as (explicitly stated) in the narrations of the hadith. General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" (11/ 515): Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: "The brotherhood (mu'akhah) took place twice: once among the Muhajirun only, in Makkah; and once between the Muhajirun and the Ansar (in Madinah), and this second one is what is meant here." Ibn Sa'd (1/ 204) reported with al-Waqidi's chains from a group of the Tabi'in that they said: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he established brotherhood among the Muhajirun, and between the Muhajirun and the Ansar, on the basis of mutual support (muwasah), and they used to inherit from one another. They were ninety (90) people, some from the Muhajirun and some from the Ansar; and it is said they were a hundred (100). Then when the verse {And those of (blood) relationship} was revealed, inheritance between them on the basis of that brotherhood was annulled."
