حدثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا الحسن بن علي بن زياد، حدثنا إسماعيل بن أبي أويس، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إبراهيم بن عُقْبة، عن عمِّه موسى بن عُقبة، قال: حدثنا عُرْوة بن الزُّبير، أنَّ مروان بن الحَكَم حدَّثه: أنَّ عمر حين طُعِنَ قال: إِنِّي رأيتُ في الجَدِّ رأيًا، فإن رأيتم أن تتّبِعُوه. فقال عثمان: إن نتَّبع رأيك، فهو رُشْدٌ، وإن نتَّبِعْ رأيَ الشيخ قبلَك، فنِعمَ ذو الرأي كان (3).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يخرجاه.

It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr that Marwan bin al-Hakam told him that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was stabbed, he said: "I have formed an opinion concerning the inheritance of the grandfather; if you see fit, then follow it." At this Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If we follow your opinion, it is entirely right guidance; and if we follow the opinion of the elder before you (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him), then what an excellent man of opinion he was."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(3) خبر صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن في المتابعات والشواهد من أجل إسماعيل بن أبي أويس، وقد توبع. وأخرجه البيهقي 6/ 246 من طريق القاسم بن عبد الله بن المغيرة، عن إسماعيل بن أبي أويس، بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: This report is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports because of Isma'il bin Abi Uways, and he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (6/ 246) narrated it via al-Qasim bin 'Abdullah bin al-Mughirah, from Isma'il bin Abi Uways, with this same chain.
وأخرج نحوه عبد الرزاق (19051) و (19052)، والدارمي (655) و (2959) من طرق عن هشام بن عروة، عن أبيه، به.
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (19051, 19052) and al-Darimi (655, 2959) narrated something similar via various routes from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father.
وأخرج ابن أبي شيبة 11/ 320 من طريق الزهري، عن سعيد بن المسيب: أنَّ عمر كتب في أمر الجدّ والكلالة في كتف، ثم طفق يستخير ربه، فلما طعن دعا بالكتف فمحاها، ثم قال: إني كنت كتبت كتابًا في الجد والكلالة، وإني قد رأيت أن أردَّكم على ما كنتم عليه، فلم يدروا ما كان في الكتف.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 320) narrated via al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab: "'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote something on a shoulder blade concerning the grandfather and al-kalalah, then kept seeking guidance (istikharah) from his Lord. When he was stabbed, he called for the shoulder blade and erased it, then said: I had written something concerning the grandfather and al-kalalah, and I have now decided to leave you upon what you were upon before. So they never knew what was on the shoulder blade."
وخبر جعل أبي بكر الصديق ﵁ الجدَّ أبًا تقدم قريبًا برقم (8180).
Note / Clarification: The report of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) treating the grandfather as a father has passed shortly before at number (8180).
