وأخبرنا أبو عبد الله، حدثنا علي بن الحسن، حدثنا أبو مَعْمَر، حدثنا وُهَيب، عن أيوب، عن عِكْرمة، عن ابن عباس: أنَّ أبا بكر جعلَه أبًا؛ يعني الجدَّ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) treated the grandfather as standing in the place of the father (in matters of inheritance) (that is, in the absence of the father, he inherits like the father).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

وأخرجه بنحوه أحمد 5/ (3385) عن إسماعيل ابن عليّة، والبخاري (6738) من طريق عبد الوارث بن سعيد، كلاهما عن أيوب السختياني، بهذا الإسناد. وانظر تتمة تخريجه وشواهده في "مسند أحمد".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 3385) narrated something similar from Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, and al-Bukhari (6738) via 'Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id; both from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani with this same chain. See the rest of its takhrij and its supporting reports in "Musnad Ahmad".
