Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever among you recites the Qur'an should also learn al-fara'id (the science of inheritance), for he may meet a Bedouin who asks: O Muhajir! Do you recite the Qur'an? He says: Yes. The Bedouin will say: I too recite the Qur'an. Then the Bedouin will ask: O Muhajir! Do you know al-fara'id (the shares of inheritance)? If he says: Yes, the Bedouin will say: That is an additional good. And if he says: No, then I think he said: Then what superiority do you have over me, O Muhajir?!"
This is a mawquf report, sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, and it is a supporting witness for the mursal report that we mentioned earlier.

Grading: The report is sahih, while this chain is weak because it is munqati', since the narration of Abu 'Ubaydah (the son of 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud) from his father is mursal (he did not hear from his father); however, he has been corroborated. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (8743) recorded it from Abu Khalifah al-Fadl bin al-Hubab, from Muhammad bin Kathir, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Darimi (2900) recorded it from Muhammad bin Yusuf, and al-Bayhaqi (6/209) and al-Khatib in "al-Fasl li-l-Wasl" (2/958) through the route of Yahya al-Qattan; both of them (Muhammad and Yahya) from Sufyan al-Thawri. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (6/209) recorded it through the route of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i. Details of the narration: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/233) and al-Khatib (2/955, 957) recorded it through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri; Sa'id bin Mansur (3) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/233) through the route of Sallam bin Sulaym Abu al-Ahwas; Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2527), and through him al-Khatib (2/958), through the route of Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah; al-Bayhaqi (6/209) through the route of Shu'bah; and al-Khatib (2/955) through the route of Isra'il. All five of them from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Ahwas 'Awf bin Malik bin Nadlah, from Ibn Mas'ud, mentioning Abu al-Ahwas in place of Abu 'Ubaydah. Grading: This chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Hatim asked his father in "al-'Ilal" (1634) about this narration of Abu Ishaq, which he narrates in both ways, and he said: "Both are correct; Abu Ishaq had a wide range of hadith." Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/235), al-Darimi (2895) and al-Tabarani (8926) recorded something similar through the route of al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi, and al-Darimi (2898) and al-Bayhaqi (6/209) through the route of al-Qasim bin al-Walid al-Hamdani, both of them from Ibn Mas'ud. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both chains are munqati', because neither of the two narrators named al-Qasim met Ibn Mas'ud.
