حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى الذُّهْلي والحسين بن الفضل البَجَلي، قالا: حدثنا أبو الوليد الطَّيالسي، حدثنا أبو هلال الراسبي، عن قَتَادة، عن سعيد بن المسيّب، قال: كتب عمرُ بن الخطّاب إلى أبي موسى الأشعري: إذا لَهَوتُم فالْهَوا بالرَّمْى، وإذا تحدَّثتُم فتحدَّثُوا بالفرائض (1). هذا وإن كان موقوفًا فإنه صحيح الإسناد، ويؤيِّده قولُه ﷺ: "اقتَدُوا بِاللَّذِينِ من بعدي أبي بكر وعمرَ" (2).

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you wish to amuse yourselves, then practise archery; and when you converse among yourselves, then discuss al-fara'id (the science of inheritance)."
Although this is a mawquf report (a statement of a Companion), its chain is sahih (authentic), and it is supported by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "After me, follow the two who will come after me, namely Abu Bakr and Umar."

(1) إسناده ليّن من أجل أبي هلال الراسبي - واسمه محمد بن سليم - ففي روايته عن قتادة اضطراب، وقد روى هذا الخبر البيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 6/ 209 من طريق وكيع عن أبي هلال عن قتادة قال: كتب عمر إذا لهوتم، فذكره، ليس فيه ذكر سعيد بن المسيب.
Grading: Its chain has softness (lin) because of Abu Hilal al-Rasibi (Muhammad bin Sulaym), for his narration from Qatadah contains idtirab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bayhaqi recorded this report in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/209) through the route of Waki', from Abu Hilal, from Qatadah, who said: "'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote: When you amuse yourselves", and he mentioned it; it does not mention Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.
وأخرج سعيد بن منصور في "السنن" (1)، وابن أبي شيبة 10/ 459 و 11/ 236، والدارمي (2892)، والبيهقي في "السنن" 6/ 209، وفي "شعب الإيمان" (1554)، وفي "المدخل إلى السنن" (376)، وابن عبد البر في "جامع بيان العلم" (1453) و (1921) و (1922) من طرق عن عاصم الأحول عن مورِّق العجلي، عن عمر قال: تَعلَّموا الفرائضَ واللَّحن والسُّنة كما تعلُّمون القرآنَ.

ورجاله ثقات، لكن رواية مورق عن عمر مرسلة فيما قاله العلائي في "جامع التحصيل".

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but it is mursal, because Ibrahim al-Nakha'i did not meet 'Umar.
(2) حديث صحيح، وقد سلف مسندًا عند المصنف برقم (4501) من حديث حذيفة.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and it has passed with the author in connected form (musnad) at no. (4501) from the hadith of Hudhayfah.
