Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Sulayman bin Jabir al-Hajari is majhul (not known), and no hearing of his from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is known. Moreover, there is disagreement over this hadith in the narrations from 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah (as will come): sometimes he says "from Sulayman bin Jabir", sometimes "from a man, from Sulayman", sometimes "it reached me from Sulayman", sometimes "from someone who narrated to him from Sulayman", and sometimes "from Sulayman, from Abu al-Ahwas, from Ibn Mas'ud". That is why al-Tirmidhi said: this hadith contains idtirab.
Important point: We say: however the chain turns, it revolves around Sulayman al-Hajari.
Details of the narration: Al-Nadr bin Shumayl narrated it (as in the author's narration here, and in al-Shashi's "Musnad" (842)); 'Uthman bin al-Haytham in al-Darimi (227); Sharik al-Nakha'i in al-Nasa'i (6271) and al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (5720); and 'Amr bin Humran in al-Daraqutni (4103) and al-Wahidi's "al-Wasit" (201). All four of them narrated it from 'Awf, from Sulayman bin Jabir, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Details of the narration: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in al-Nasa'i (6272), and Abu 'Ubaydah al-Haddad ('Abd al-Wahid bin Wasil) in al-Tayalisi (403); both of them from 'Awf, who said: "It reached me from Sulayman bin Jabir, who said: Ibn Mas'ud said", and he mentioned it.
Details of the narration: Abu Usamah (Hammad bin Usamah) narrated it in al-Tirmidhi (2091 M), al-Shashi (843) and al-Bayhaqi (6/208) from 'Awf, from "someone who narrated to him", from Sulayman bin Jabir, from Ibn Mas'ud. And Hawdhah bin Khalifah narrated it (as with the author at 8150, and with Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Fitan" (261), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "Bayan Fadl al-'Ilm" (1029) and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (11/378-379)) from 'Awf, from "a man", from Sulayman bin Jabir, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (726): "The correct version is that of Ibn al-Mubarak and those who agreed with him," meaning that there is an intermediary between 'Awf and Sulayman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Muthanna bin Bakr al-'Attar was an odd exception (shadh) among the students of 'Awf, narrating it from him as: "from Sulayman al-Hajari, from Abu al-Ahwas, from Ibn Mas'ud", thus adding Abu al-Ahwas. Abu Ya'la (5028) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (6/208) and "al-Shu'ab" (1548) recorded it through his route. Al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (2103) preferred the narration of the majority over his, and said: "The mursal is more correct."
Important point: We say: there is disagreement about al-Muthanna bin Bakr; some considered him majhul, some graded him weak, and Abu Zur'ah distinguished between him and the one from whom al-Muqaddami narrates, and considered him hasan al-hadith. Allah knows best.
Important point: The narration of Abu al-Ahwas from Ibn Mas'ud is authentic, but as his own statement, mawquf on him; it will be mentioned at narration no. (8152), so see it there.
Note / Clarification: Al-Mizzi in "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" (7/31-32) judged the hadith of Abu Usamah to be an error (wahm), and Ibn Hajar responded to him in "al-Nukat al-Ziraf", saying: "Abu Usamah was corroborated by 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, and he suffices as a hafiz, and also by Abu 'Ubaydah al-Haddad and Hawdhah bin Khalifah, all of them from 'Awf. And al-Nadr bin Shumayl agreed with Sharik, from 'Awf, in dropping the intermediary. So it is clear that the disagreement comes from 'Awf himself."
