Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The mention of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) has dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B).
Grading: This chain is very weak (da'if jiddan) because of Hafs bin 'Umar bin Abi al-'Attaf, for he is matruk al-hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (4/806): Hafs bin 'Umar bin Abi 'Attaf al-Madani is munkar al-hadith; he narrated from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about teaching the laws of inheritance (fara'id), and once he said: "from Abu al-Zinad, from al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah", and it is not authentic.
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli, after recording it in the biography of this Hafs in "al-Du'afa'" (353), said: "He is not corroborated on it, and it is known only through him." Ibn 'Adi, after also recording it in his biography in "al-Kamil" (3/383), said: "His hadith is, as al-Bukhari mentioned, munkar al-hadith." For this reason al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis" and said about him: "wahin bi-marrah" (utterly weak).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (2719) recorded it from Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami, from Hafs bin 'Umar bin Abi al-'Attaf, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2091) recorded it through the route of Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi, from al-Fadl bin Dalham, from 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah al-A'rabi, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Abu Hurayrah.
Grading: This chain is very weak, because Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi is accused (of lying).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Moreover, there is disagreement over this hadith in the narrations from 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah, as will be indicated in the next two hadiths (8149) and (8150); that is why al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith contains idtirab (inconsistency)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (4075), but its chain contains a weak narrator and an unknown one.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Daraqutni's "al-Sunan" (4104), but its chain is very weak and of no value.
