Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8141

It is narrated from Hani, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever he stood at a grave, he would weep so much that his beard became wet (with tears). It was said to him: You do not weep when Paradise and Hell are mentioned, yet you weep at the mention of this (the grave)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The grave is the first of the stages of the Hereafter. If (a person) is saved from it, what comes after it is easier than it; and if he is not saved from it, what comes after it is harder than it." And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "I have not seen any sight more horrifying than the grave."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
