حدثني علي بن حَمْشَاذ العَدْل، حدثنا عُبيد بن شَريك، حدثنا سعيد بن أبي مريم، أخبرني يحيى بن أيوب، حدثني عُمارة بن غَزيَّة، حدثني يعلى بن شدّاد بن أَوس، عن أبيه، قال: كنَّا نَعُدُّ على عهدِ رسول الله ﷺ أنَّ الرَّياءَ الشِّركُ الأصغرُ (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "In the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to count showing off (riya') as the lesser shirk (minor association of partners with Allah)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) صحيح لغيره، وهذا إسناد حسن عبيد بن شريك: هو عبيد بن عبد الواحد بن شريك.
Grading: The hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and this chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ubayd bin Sharik: he is 'Ubayd bin 'Abd al-Wahid bin Sharik.
وأخرجه البزار في "مسنده" (3481)، والطبري في مسند عمر من "تهذيب الآثار 2/ 796، وابن الأعرابي في "معجمه" (2246)، والطبراني في "الأوسط" (196)، والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (6424) من طريق سعيد بن أبي مريم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (3481), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Umar 2/796), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (2246), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (196) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6424), through the route of Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with this chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" (7160)، وفي "الأوسط" (196)، وفي "مسند الشاميين" (2146) عن أحمد بن حماد بن زُغبة المصري، والبيهقي (6424) من طريق يحيى بن أيوب بن بادي، كلاهما عن سعيد بن أبي مريم، عن ابن لهيعة، عن عمارة بن غزية، به. وفي "المعجم الأوسط" و "شعب الإيمان" قرن بابن لهيعة يحيى بن أيوب. وفي رواية "المعجم الأوسط" قال: الشرك الأكبر، بدل الأصغر!
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (7160), "al-Awsat" (196) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2146) from Ahmad bin Hammad bin Zughbah al-Misri, and al-Bayhaqi (6424) through the route of Yahya bin Ayyub bin Badi; both of them from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Umarah bin Ghaziyyah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" and "Shu'ab al-Iman", Yahya bin Ayyub is paired with Ibn Lahi'ah.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" it says "the greater shirk" instead of "the lesser"!
وأخرجه ابن قانع في "معجم الصحابة" 1/ 34، والبيهقي (6425) من طريقين عن ابن لهيعة، عن عبد ربه بن سعيد عن يعلى بن شداد، عن أبيه قال: كنا نعد الرياء، فذكره. وفي "معجم الصحابة" قال: الشرك الأكبر!
