أخبرني إبراهيم بن عِصْمة العَدْل، حدثني السَّرِيّ بن خُزَيمة، حدثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الله الأُوَيسي، عن كَثير بن زيد عن رُبَيح بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي سعيد الخُدْري، عن أبيه، عن جدِّه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "الشِّركُ الخفيُّ أن يعملَ الرَّجلُ لمكانِ الرَّجل" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hidden shirk (concealed association of partners with Allah) is that a man does a deed (for show) because of another man's presence or standing."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ليِّن، كثير بن زيد - وهو الأسلمي - ورُبيح بن عبد الرحمن فيهما لِين.
Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft/weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Kathir bin Zayd (al-Aslami) and Rubayh bin 'Abd al-Rahman both have softness (lin) in them.
وأخرجه ضمن قصةٍ أحمد 17/ (11252) عن الزُّبيري محمد بن عبد الله بن الزبير، وابن ماجه (4204) من طريق أبي خالد الأحمر، كلاهما عن كثير بن زيد بهذا الإسناد. وانظر ما بعده.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17/11252) recorded it as part of a story from al-Zubayri (Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr), and Ibn Majah (4204) through the route of Abu Khalid al-Ahmar; both of them from Kathir bin Zayd, with this chain. See the next narration.
