Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8128

It is narrated from the father of Urwah bin Muhammad bin Atiyyah, from his father, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with some people of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr. I was the youngest of the group, so they left me behind with their belongings. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he fulfilled their needs. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is anyone of you still remaining?" They said: Yes, a boy who is with us, whom we left behind with our belongings. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to call me. They came to me and said: Answer the call of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said: "As long as Allah keeps you self-sufficient, do not ask people for anything, for the upper hand is the one that gives and the lower hand is the one that receives, and the wealth of Allah Almighty is such that it will be asked about (on the Day of Resurrection) and it is given (for distribution)." The narrator said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to me in our own language (dialect).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence), and this chain is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. 'Urwah bin Muhammad: a group narrated from him and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah; he was a governor for 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz and known for his righteousness, so he is hasan al-hadith. 2. His father Muhammad bin 'Atiyyah: no one narrated from him except his son 'Urwah, and no declaration of reliability is reported for him from anyone except Ibn Hibban; but he is a senior Tabi'i and he narrated this hadith from his father, so the hadith of someone like him is fit for corroborations and supporting reports. 3. His father 'Atiyyah: he is Ibn 'Urwah; he is also called Ibn Sa'd, and also Ibn 'Amr al-Sa'di al-Jushami.
