Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8126

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Give me some advice that is brief. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Adopt despair of (and independence from) what is in the hands of people (of wealth), and beware of greed, for it is present poverty. Offer your prayer as though you are bidding farewell (to the world), and beware of anything for which you would later have to apologise."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is hasan as mawquf, while this chain is utterly weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. 'Amr bin 'Uthman al-Sawwaq: we do not know him. 2. Muhammad bin Abi Humayd: the majority graded him weak, and he narrates munkar reports. 3. Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas: this is how his lineage occurs in al-Hakim, traced to Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, and what is known in the narration of Muhammad bin Abi Humayd is that he narrates from Isma'il al-Waqqasi. But in the sources that recorded the hadith he is "Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Sa'd al-Ansari", attributed to the Ansar, and we found no mention of this person in the books on narrators. That is why al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (4/321): "(Ibn al-Athir) quoted Abu Musa as saying that this Isma'il is in fact Ibn Muhammad bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. I (Ibn Hajar) say: if it is as Abu Musa said, then whoever called him an Ansari erred."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2249), al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (1538), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (705, 3226), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Zuhd" (101) and Qawwam al-Sunnah in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (701), through various routes from Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (7753) through the route of Mansur bin Abi Nuwayrah, from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, from Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Jabir.
Details of the narration: He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of greed, for it is present poverty, and beware of anything for which one has to apologise."
Important point: Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated this hadith from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir except Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, and no one from Muhammad except Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash; Mansur bin Abi Nuwayrah is alone in narrating it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: it also contains Mansur bin Abi Nuwayrah, who is munkar al-hadith. Ibn 'Adi cited some of his munkar reports in "al-Kamil" (6/392) and said: things that are not preserved occur in his hadith. Ibn Hibban was lenient in "al-Thiqat" and called him "mustaqim al-hadith" (sound in hadith).
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (1017) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (312) through the route of 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ja'far bin Sulayman, from Humayd al-A'raj, from 'Ikrimah bin Khalid, who said: Sa'd (bin Abi Waqqas) said to his son:
Details of the narration: "My son, beware of meeting anyone after me who is more sincere in advising you than I am. When you intend to pray, perform ablution well, and pray a prayer as though you will never pray after it. Beware of greed, for it is present poverty. Hold to despair (of what people have), for that is true wealth. Beware of any word or deed for which one has to apologise, and do as you see fit."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ikrimah is known for narrating from the sons of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas.
Grading: This chain is hasan, and it is more likely correct than the marfu' narration of Muhammad bin Abi Humayd.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari with Ahmad (38/23498) and Ibn Majah (4171), and its chain is weak, as we explained in both places.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Ibn 'Umar in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (4427), al-Quda'i's "Musnad al-Shihab" (952), al-Bayhaqi's "al-Zuhd al-Kabir" (528) and Ibn 'Asakir's "al-Mu'jam" (323).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Haythami said in "al-Majma'" (10/229): "It contains narrators whom I do not know."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Anas in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Zuhd al-Kabir" (527), and its chain is very weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, who is matruk, and Shabib bin Bishr, who is weak; al-Bukhari said about him: "munkar al-hadith".
Details of the narration: It has another route from Shabib bin Bishr from Anas that does not include al-Kudaymi; al-Diya' recorded it in "al-Mukhtarah" (6/2199), limiting it to his words: "Beware of anything for which one has to apologise."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Ibn Mas'ud in brief, with the part about despairing of what is in people's hands, in Ibn al-A'rabi's "al-Mu'jam" (2329), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (10239) and "al-Awsat" (5778), Tammam's "al-Fawa'id" (1653), and Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (4/188, 8/304).
Important point: Al-Tabarani said: Ibrahim bin Ziyad is alone in narrating it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: al-Azdi said about him (Ibrahim): "matruk al-hadith". Mutayyan, who narrated from him, also considered this hadith of his munkar; when he narrated it, Mutayyan said to him: "Did you see this in a dream?!"
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has also come from the hadith of Sa'd bin 'Umarah as mawquf on him, in al-Marwazi's "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (946), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (5459) and Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3216).
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
