Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We think that al-Hakim, or someone above him, made an error (wahm) in this chain regarding the lineage of "Kulthum"; for the one known for narrating from Sulayman bin Habib is his client "Kulthum bin Ziyad al-Muharibi", and al-Nasa'i declared him weak in his book "al-Du'afa'" (510). As for "Kulthum bin Jabr", he is far too senior for Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah al-Kufi to narrate from him, and he is himself of the same generation as Sulayman bin Habib (for Kulthum died in 130 AH and Abu Usamah was born around 120 AH). No narration of Abu Usamah from Kulthum bin Jabr is known, nor any of Kulthum from Sulayman bin Habib. And we have not found it anywhere except with the author (al-Hakim) as a hadith of Kulthum. Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "Kulthum is weak."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Musa bin Harun is Ibn Abdullah al-Hammal al-Baghdadi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "Dhamm al-Dunya" (10), Abu Ya'la (as cited in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 3287) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10020, 10021), via Marwan bin Mu'awiyah al-Fazari, from Muhammad bin Abi Qays, from Sulayman bin Habib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This corroboration is "talif" (worthless), because Muhammad bin Abi Qays is in fact "Muhammad bin Sa'id al-Maslub", and he is a kadhdhab (liar).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, but there is disagreement over its chain. Al-Bazzar (1030) recorded it via Musa bin Isma'il, from Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, from Haywah bin Shurayh, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan (may Allah curse him) said: The son of Adam will not escape me in one of three things: taking wealth unlawfully, spending it where it has no right, or withholding it from its due." Its narrators are thiqah, but Abu Salamah did not hear from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Musa bin Isma'il was contradicted by al-Husayn al-Marwazi in "al-Zuhd" (547) and by Abdullah bin Muhammad, the nephew of Juwayriyah, in Ibn Abi Khaythamah's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir", second volume (4004). Both of them narrated it from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Haywah bin Shurayh, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, from Salamah bin Abi Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, from his father, as "mursal". So they put "Salamah bin Abi Salamah" in place of al-Zuhri and did not mention Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf in it. About (the narrator) Salamah, Abu Hatim said: "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (1029) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (288), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (500), recorded it via 'Isa bin Ibrahim, from 'Afif bin Salim, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But 'Uqayl bin Khalid is not mentioned in al-Tabarani's narration. There is no harm in its narrators, but the defect of the break in the chain (inqita') remains.
