Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was distorted into "al-Husayn".
Clarification: It is thus in the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", and it is an old distortion; the correct name is "Bashir bin Salman", as in the sources of takhrij and the books on narrators, and some scholars have stated this explicitly.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi went by the apparent (distorted) name, and so he declared the hadith weak on that basis and said: "It is munkar, and Bashir (i.e. Ibn Zadhan) was declared weak by al-Daraqutni and accused by Ibn al-Jawzi."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators (of this chain) are thiqah (trustworthy) except "Sayyar"; the scholars differed in identifying him. Al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasa'i, al-Dulabi, Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hibban held that he is "Sayyar Abu al-Hakam"; al-Bukhari in his "Tarikh" and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" listed Tariq bin Shihab among the shaykhs of Sayyar Abu al-Hakam and Bashir bin Salman among his students, and they did not list Tariq among the shaykhs of Sayyar Abu Hamzah. This Sayyar Abu al-Hakam is "thiqah".
Important point: Whereas Ahmad in his "Musnad" (7/ 4220), Ibn Ma'in and 'Amr bin 'Ali (as al-Khatib reported in "Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 1/ 568-571), Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni held that he is "Sayyar Abu Hamzah"; al-Khatib preferred this, and al-Mizzi and Ibn Hajar followed him. Imam Ahmad said: The correct view is that he is Sayyar Abu Hamzah, for Sayyar Abu al-Hakam did not narrate anything from Tariq bin Shihab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (762): Bashir bin Salman narrates it from Sayyar, and there is disagreement over it from him; a group (including Makhlad bin Yazid, Waki', Yahya bin Adam, Abdullah bin Dawud al-Khuraybi and Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri) narrated it and all of them said: "from Sayyar Abu al-Hakam", and their saying "Sayyar Abu al-Hakam" is an error (wahm). He is in fact "Sayyar Abu Hamzah al-Kufi". Likewise Abd al-Razzaq narrated it from al-Thawri, from Bashir, from "Sayyar Abu Hamzah", and this is correct. Sayyar Abu al-Hakam neither heard anything from Tariq bin Shihab nor narrated from him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Al-Daraqutni did not point out that there was also disagreement over it from al-Thawri. Al-Khatib said: "There is disagreement over this hadith from Sufyan al-Thawri; al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran narrated from him the same as the group (i.e. Sayyar Abu al-Hakam), whereas 'Umar bin 'Ali al-Muqaddami and Abd al-Razzaq bin Hammam narrated from him, from Bashir, from Sayyar Abu Hamzah."
Grading: We say: A group narrated from Sayyar Abu Hamzah, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (6/ 421), so his hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nufayli is Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Nufayl al-Quda'i.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "al-'Uqubat" (286), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Zuhd" (250, 279), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (868), al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (768), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9787), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (357), Tammam in "al-Fawa'id" (1081), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (8/ 315) and al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (597), through various routes from Makhlad bin Yazid, from Bashir bin Salman, from Sayyar Abu al-Hakam, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of "Fawa'id Tammam" the name Bashir Abu Isma'il has been distorted into "al-Sari bin Isma'il".
Reference / Source: Al-Isma'ili recorded it in "al-Mu'jam" (206) via Harun bin Ma'ruf, and Abu Nu'aym (7/ 242) via Abd al-Hamid bin Muhammad bin al-Mustam; both of them narrate it from Makhlad bin Yazid, from Mis'ar bin Kidam (in place of Bashir), from Sayyar. Whereas in the previous routes it is narrated from Makhlad bin Yazid in the well-known way (al-jaddah), i.e. from Bashir.
