Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8113

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be modest before Allah Almighty as He truly deserves." We said: "O Prophet of Allah, we (praise be to Allah) are modest." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is not what it means. Rather, whoever wishes to be modest before Allah as He truly deserves should guard the head and what it contains (the mind and senses), take care of the stomach and what it holds (of food and thoughts), and remember death and decay (in the grave). Whoever intends the Hereafter abandons the adornment of the world. So whoever does all this has truly been modest before Allah as He deserves."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Clarification: The name established here is taken from manuscript (K). Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "al-Sabbah bin Murrah", whereas manuscript (M) has a blank space after "al-Sabbah bin".

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of "al-Sabbah", who is al-Sabbah bin Muhammad bin Abi Hazim al-Ahmasi al-Kufi. Al-'Uqayli said:

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of al-Sabbah, who is Ibn Muhammad bin Abi Hazim al-Ahmasi al-Kufi. Al-'Uqayli, after describing him as prone to error, said: He makes mawquf reports marfu'. Al-Mundhiri said in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib": Al-Sabbah was declared weak for narrating this hadith as marfu', and what is correct is that it is mawquf on Ibn Mas'ud. Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan": He narrated as marfu' two hadiths which are in fact the words of Abdullah (bin Mas'ud).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Murrah al-Hamdani is Ibn Sharahil, known as "Murrah al-Tayyib".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/ 3671) and al-Tirmidhi (2458) recorded it via Muhammad bin 'Ubayd, with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "gharib"; we know it through this route only from the narration of Aban bin Ishaq from al-Sabbah bin Muhammad.
Note / Clarification: See the full discussion of it and of its supporting report in "Musnad Ahmad".
