Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy) except Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah, who is "saduq" (truthful) and hasan in hadith. There is disagreement over him as to whether this hadith is narrated "connected" (wasl) or "mursal" (irsal). Imam Ahmad used to reject its being connected, as in Abu Dawud's "Masa'il" (1922), and said: "This (mistake) comes from Muhammad bin 'Amr", i.e. his narrating it as connected. Al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (1397) preferred its being "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Hakim's narration there is no mention of the intermediary between Yazid bin Harun and Muhammad bin 'Amr, whereas in other people's narrations from Yazid bin Harun, "Abdullah bin Ibrahim", the father of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, is mentioned between them.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (13/ 7925) and al-Nasa'i (1963) recorded it via Yazid bin Harun, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from Muhammad bin 'Amr, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (4258), al-Tirmidhi (2307), al-Nasa'i (1963) and Ibn Hibban (2992, 2994, 2995) recorded it via al-Fadl bin Musa; and Ibn Hibban (2993) via Abd al-'Aziz bin Muslim; both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin 'Amr.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan gharib".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 225) recorded it from Muhammad bin Bishr, from Muhammad bin 'Amr, from Abu Salamah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as "mursal".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are narrations from more than one Companion, whose takhrij we have given in "Musnad Ahmad".
