It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ali, seek kindness from the merciful ones of my Ummah and you will live (in peace) under their shelter; and do not seek it from those whose hearts are hard, for the curse descends upon them. O Ali, Allah Almighty created kindness and also designated certain people for it; then He made kindness beloved to them and made doing it pleasing to them, and Allah directs those who seek kindness toward them just as He sends water toward barren land, so that through it the land and its inhabitants are brought to life. O Ali, those who do kindness in this world are the very ones who will receive kindness in the Hereafter."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was distorted into "Sa'id", and the correct form is what appears in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".
Linguistic note: In the manuscripts this word was written with "ra'" (instead of dal), and what we have established is taken from "al-Talkhis". Al-Jawhari said in "al-Sihah": "الجَدْب" (drought, barrenness) is the opposite of "الخِصْب" (fertility, plenty); "مكانٌ جَدْب" or "جَديب" means a place of evident barrenness, and "أرضُ جَدْبة" (barren land).
Grading: Its chain is "talif" (utterly ruined). Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim al-Kufi: we do not know him. 2. Hibban bin 'Ali (al-'Anazi): he is weak. 3. Sa'd bin Tarif and al-Asbagh bin Nubatah: both are "matruk" (abandoned). Reference / Source: Al-Khatib recorded something similar in "Tarikh Baghdad" (3/ 37 and 13/ 227) via al-Harith al-'Ukli, from 'Ali, as "marfu'": "The people of kindness in this world are the people of kindness in the Hereafter, and the people of evil in this world are the people of evil in the Hereafter." Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain is Muhammad bin al-Husayn bin 'Imran (Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi), about whom al-Khatib said: He used to fabricate hadith. (1290). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its first part has a supporting report (shahid) from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in Ibn Hibban's "al-Majruhin" (2/ 286), al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (4717) and elsewhere. Grading: Its chain is very weak and of no avail. Reference / Source: For more, see "al-Rawd al-Bassam" (1290) by Ustadh Jasim al-Dawsari. 7/ 262 - 263. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the saying "أهل المعروف في الدنيا" (the people of kindness in this world) has several supporting reports narrated from more than one Companion, but none of them is free from criticism. Reference / Source: See these supporting reports in al-Haythami's "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (7/ 262-263).
