Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8084

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will certainly be picked out (through trials) just as good dates are picked out from a bowl. The best of you will depart and the worst of you will remain; so (if you wish to escape the trials), die if you are able to."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and Abu Humayd refers to al-Ta'ini.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts, in this place and in the one following it, (the name) has been distorted into "Jamil".

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" except for the words: "So die if you are able", and this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Humayd (the client of Musafi') is majhul (unknown). He is not al-Ta'ini as the author (al-Hakim) mistakenly thought, since al-Bukhari mentioned this hadith in the biography of Abu Humayd the client of Musafi', as will come. As for al-Ta'ini, al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/ 282) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (6/ 192) named him 'Ali bin Abdullah and gave his kunyah as Abu Humaydah. Al-Daraqutni differed from them in "al-'Ilal" (1689) and counted him as Abu Humayd al-Madani al-Muq'ad (Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd al-A'raj).
Note / Clarification: Yunus (in the chain) is Ibn Yazid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in the section on kunyahs of "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (9/ 25) from Isma'il bin Abi Uways, with this same chain.
Important point: This hadith will come later at number (8542) via Sulayman bin Bilal and at number (8543) via Talhah bin Yahya; both of them narrate from Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (7801), Ibn Hibban (6851), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (4676), Tammam in "al-Fawa'id" (1452 and 1453) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (8/ 222) recorded it via Abd al-Hamid bin Habib bin Abi al-'Ishrin; and Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (258) via al-Walid bin Muslim. Both of them narrate it from al-Awza'i, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni considered these two narrations an error (wahm). The narration of Ibn Abi al-'Ishrin occurs in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (9/ 25) as mawquf on Abu Hurayrah!
Details of the narration: Isma'il bin Abdullah bin Sama'ah and 'Umar bin Abd al-Wahid narrated it from al-Awza'i, from Yunus bin Yazid, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Hurayrah, as "mursal and mawquf". Al-Daraqutni said this in "al-'Ilal".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a marfu' report from Mirdas al-Aslami: "The righteous will depart, one after another, and there will remain dregs like the dregs of barley or dates, for whom Allah will not care at all." Al-Bukhari (6434) recorded it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from Abdullah bin 'Amr with the wording: "O Abdullah bin 'Amr, how will it be with you when you are left among the dregs of people (the worst of people) like this?" Al-Bukhari recorded it as mu'allaq (480), and others recorded it with a connected chain. See "Musnad Ahmad" (11/ 6508).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Hibban (5950).
Important point: See the hadith of Abu Dharr which passed at number (5553), and the hadith of Ruwayfi' bin Thabit which will come at number (8541).

Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was distorted into "al-Ta'i", and the correct name was established from Imam al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/ 282) and Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (6/ 192).
