Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8060

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this blessed verse: "So whomever Allah intends to guide, He opens his breast to Islam" [Surah al-An'am: 125]. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when the light enters the breast, it becomes expanded." It was said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there any sign by which this can be recognised? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes: withdrawing from the abode of delusion (the world), turning towards the abode of eternity (the Hereafter), and preparing for death before it arrives."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts (handwritten copies) this name has been changed by distortion (a copying error) into "al-Haytham".

Grading: Its chain is extremely weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains 'Adi bin al-Fadl (al-Taymi al-Basri), who is "matruk al-hadith"; for this reason Imam al-Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) declared this narration defective in "al-Talkhis" and said: 'Adi is a discarded (saqit) narrator. Moreover, there is disagreement over 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi in this narration: 'Adi bin al-Fadl narrated it (as with the author) from al-Mas'udi, from al-Qasim, from his father, from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawsul (connected).
Details of the narration: Whereas Yunus bin 'Ubayd narrated it from al-Mas'udi from Ibn Mas'ud. On the other hand, 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak and Waki' bin al-Jarrah narrated it from al-Mas'udi, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abu Ja'far 'Abd Allah bin Miswar al-Hashimi, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal".
Important point: Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) declared this mursal narration to be correct (preferred) in "al-'Ilal" (812).
Reference / Source: As for the route of 'Adi bin al-Fadl, Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "Qisar al-Amal" (131), and through him Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10068), from Muhammad bin Ja'far al-Warkani, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: As for the route of Yunus bin 'Ubayd, Imam al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (8/27), and Abu al-Qasim 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Baghdadi (known as Hamid Ra'sih) in "al-Muntaqa al-Awwal wal-Thalith min Hadith al-Marwazi" (82), through Mahbub bin al-Hasan al-Hashimi, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah al-Mas'udi, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Qasim al-Hamid added in his narration "from his father" after al-Mas'udi; we think this is an error. "Mahbub" in the chain is actually the nickname of Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Hilal, and he has some weakness (lin); moreover, al-Mas'udi did not live in the time of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e. there is a break).
Reference / Source: As for the route of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, it is in his book "al-Zuhd" (315), and Waki''s narration is in "al-Zuhd" (15); both of them narrated it from al-Mas'udi, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abu Ja'far 'Abd Allah bin Miswar, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narrator ('Abd Allah bin Miswar) is matruk and accused of lying (muttaham bil-kadhib).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A group of other narrators corroborated al-Mas'udi on this chain: 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Tafsir" (1/218), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (13/221), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (8/26 and 27) and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (4/1384), through various routes from 'Amr bin Murrah via 'Abd Allah bin Miswar.
Note / Clarification: In Ibn Abi Shaybah's text the name "Miswar" has been distorted into "Mas'ud".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Zayd bin Abi Unaysah contradicted this group in narrating from 'Amr bin Murrah: he narrated it from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abu 'Ubaydah, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (8/27) through Abu 'Abd al-Rahim Khalid bin Abi Yazid, from Ibn Abi Unaysah,
Reference / Source: (continuation of the above) and the chain up to him contains weakness.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu 'Abd al-Rahim was contradicted by Yazid bin Sinan al-Ruhawi (as in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Zuhd" (974) and "al-Qada' wal-Qadar" (389)): he narrated it from Ibn Abi Unaysah, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Harith, from Ibn Mas'ud. That is, he put 'Abd Allah bin al-Harith in place of Abu 'Ubaydah (in the chain), and Yazid bin Sinan is a da'if narrator.
Reference / Source: Waki' recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (14), Sa'id bin Mansur in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (918), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi in "Nawadir al-Usul" (543), al-Tabari (8/26), Abu al-Shaykh in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin" (87), Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/305 and 2/38) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wal-Sifat" (326), through Khalid bin Abi Karimah from 'Abd Allah bin Miswar.
Details of the narration: However, Abu al-Shaykh and Abu Nu'aym added in their narrations "from his father" after 'Abd Allah bin Miswar.
Important point: Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) said in "al-'Ilal" (812): "All of these (connected narrations) are errors; the correct version is from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abu Ja'far 'Abd Allah bin al-Miswar, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal; this is also how al-Thawri reported it."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Note that this 'Abd Allah bin al-Miswar bin 'Awn bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib is a "matruk" narrator.
Reference / Source: In al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's "Nawadir al-Usul" (542) this narration occurs as follows: Salih bin Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Ibrahim bin Yahya al-Aslami narrated to us, he said: Abu Suhayl bin Abi Anas narrated to us, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that a man said: O Prophet of Allah, which of the believers is the most astute? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who remember death the most and prepare for it best. When light enters the heart, it expands and becomes spacious." They asked: O Prophet of Allah, what is the sign of that? He said: "Turning towards the abode of eternity (the Hereafter), withdrawing from the abode of delusion (this world), and preparing for death before death descends."
Grading: We say: this chain is extremely weak because of Ibrahim al-Aslami, since he is "matruk al-hadith".
Important point: Our strong presumption is that this hadith of Ibn 'Umar has been mixed into the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: either the error is from Ibrahim al-Aslami, or the beginning of Ibn Mas'ud's hadith dropped out of al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's "Nawadir", because no other hadith scholar recorded this hadith in this form. For the takhrij of Ibn 'Umar's hadith, see our annotated edition of "Sunan Ibn Majah" (4259).
