It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever loves his world harms his Hereafter, and whoever loves his Hereafter harms his world. So prefer what will remain (the Hereafter) over what will perish (the world)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Note / Clarification: Manuscript (Z) has (the word) "fa-athara" (so he preferred).
Grading: (3) This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting reports), although this chain is da'if due to a break, since al-Muttalib bin 'Abd Allah bin Hantab is not established to have heard from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad refers to "al-Darawardi". Reference / Source: Ahmad (32/19698) narrated it from Abu Salamah Mansur bin Salamah, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (709) narrated it through Ya'qub bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Iskandarani, from 'Amr bin Abi 'Amr, with this same chain. Note / Clarification: This hadith will come later with the author (al-Hakim) (no. 8095) through Isma'il bin Ja'far from 'Amr bin Abi 'Amr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting it (as a shahid) is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) with Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Zuhd" (161), which he narrated through Muhammad bin 'Amr from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah as marfu' with the wording: "Whoever seeks this world harms the Hereafter, and whoever seeks the Hereafter harms this world." Then I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "So harm the perishing (world) for the sake of the lasting (Hereafter)." Grading: Its chain is "hasan", Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi 'Asim is alone in narrating it from his shaykh Hudbah bin 'Abd al-Wahhab. Ibn Abi 'Asim declared Hudbah thiqah, while Ibn Hibban said in "al-Thiqat": He sometimes made mistakes. Important point: The most "sahih" thing on this topic is what is narrated from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as his own statement (mawquf), with wording similar to the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. Reference / Source: Waki' narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (70) and Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (13/287) through Huzayl bin Shurahbil; Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (664) through 'Amr bin Murrah; and Waki' (72), Hannad (663) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/300) through Ibrahim al-Nakha'i. All three (Huzayl, 'Amr and Ibrahim) narrate it from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
