Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8048

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fears (an enemy attack) sets out (on his journey) in the early part of the night, and whoever sets out in time reaches his destination. Beware! The merchandise of Allah is very costly. Beware! The merchandise of Allah is very precious (and it is Paradise)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Hakim's narration the narrator's name occurs thus as "Burd", whereas al-Hakim narrated it in two ways (as al-Bayhaqi said in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (855 and 10092)): once via "Yazid bin Sinan" and once via "Burd bin Sinan". Then al-Bayhaqi commented: He said "Burd bin Sinan", while some said "Yazid bin Sinan", and likewise Abu 'Isa al-Tirmidhi called him "Yazid bin Sinan" in his book.
Important point: Our strong presumption is that this (change of name) is an error (wahm) of al-Hakim, because everyone who narrated this hadith did so through "Yazid", not "Burd",
Technical note / Defect ('illah): and al-'Uqayli too, in the entry on Yazid bin Sinan al-Tamimi in "al-Du'afa'", stated explicitly that Yazid is alone in narrating this hadith; he wrote: He is not corroborated in it, and it is known only through him.

Grading: In sha' Allah, this hadith is "hasan" on the strength of the narrations after it (supporting reports),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): while this particular chain is da'if because of Yazid bin Sinan, the same Yazid al-Tamimi whom the author (al-Hakim) named "Burd". Abu 'Aqil (in the chain) refers to "'Abd Allah bin 'Aqil al-Thaqafi al-Kufi".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2450) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abi al-Nadr, from Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, with this same chain,
Grading: and said: This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only from the hadith of Abu al-Nadr.
Note / Clarification: Al-Ramahurmuzi says in "Amthal al-Hadith": This is one of the finest and most concise metaphors, pointing to a meaning not tied to anything in its literal wording. Its meaning is: "Whoever fears the Fire strives in deeds, and whoever strives in deeds reaches Paradise." Thus he likened the one who fears the Fire to a traveller who fears missing the halting-place, so he does not linger but sets out in the first part of the night. "Al-idlaj" means: travelling in the early part of the night. And Paradise was described as "costly" (ghaliyah) because of its nobility and loftiness, and because it is not attained through ease and negligence; rather it is attained only through striving against the self, overcoming desires and abandoning lusts.
