Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8047

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The heart of the son of Adam is like a sparrow; it turns over seven times a day."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): because Khalid bin Ma'dan did not live in the time of (the Companion) Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (so the chain is munqati'); moreover, Baqiyyah bin al-Walid has weakness in him and is a "mudallis", and here he narrated with "'an" ('an'anah, without stating that he heard it). Further, narrators more reliable than him contradicted him and made this narration "mawquf" on Abu 'Ubaydah (i.e. it is the Companion's statement, not the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him)), as will come. Suwayd bin Sa'id also has weakness, but he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahwayh narrated it in his "Musnad", as found in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (2842), and through him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (5/216) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (740); al-Tabarani also recorded it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1142) through 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Najdah,
Details of the narration: both of them (Ishaq and 'Abd al-Wahhab) narrate it from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid with this same chain,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): and after the narration Abu Nu'aym said: Khalid (bin Ma'dan) did not meet Abu 'Ubaydah.
Note / Clarification: The author (Imam al-Hakim) will mention this narration again later (no. 8133).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/322), and through him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/102), narrated it from Waki', and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (739) through Muhammad bin Yusuf,
Details of the narration: both of them (Waki' and Muhammad) report it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Thawr bin Yazid, from Khalid bin Ma'dan, from Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah as his own statement (mawquf),
Grading: this chain is entirely "sahih" up to Khalid bin Ma'dan, and it is more sound and more likely correct than the narration of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but it nevertheless remains "munqati'" between Khalid and Abu 'Ubaydah, as we have stated earlier.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic it is narrated from al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'": "The heart of the son of Adam turns about more intensely than a cooking pot when it comes to a full boil"; this narration has already passed (no. 3179).
