Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8045

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a fever. I placed my hand on top of the blanket and felt the heat of the fever. I said: O Messenger of Allah! How severe your fever is! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such is the case with us, the company of Prophets: pain and illness are doubled for us so that the reward is also doubled for us." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Which people are most severely tested? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Prophets." I said: Then who? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the righteous. Indeed, (in earlier nations) a man would be tested with poverty and want until he had nothing but a cloak, which he would cut open and wear (in place of clothing), and one of them would be tested with lice until they killed him. And those saintly people loved trial and affliction as much as you love wealth and gifts."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
