Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8044

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Dhu al-Hulayfah and saw a dead sheep with its leg raised upwards. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you think that this sheep is worthless and contemptible in the eyes of its owner?" The Companions said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! The world is even more worthless in the sight of Allah than this sheep is to its owner. And if the world were worth even the wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, He would not give a disbeliever even a sip of water from it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): while this particular chain is da'if because of Zakariyya bin Manzur, and it is because of this narrator that Imam al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis"; however, he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (4110) narrated it through various routes from Zakariyya bin Manzur, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2320) narrated it with similar wording through 'Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (5838) through 'Abd Allah bin Mus'ab bin Thabit and (5921) through Zam'ah bin Salih,
Details of the narration: all three of these narrators narrate it from Abu Hazim with this same chain.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is sahih gharib through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although all these chains are not free of some slight weakness, they strengthen one another.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting it (as a shahid) is the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (2957): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed through the market, entering from the direction of al-'Aliyah (the upper part of Madinah), with the people on both sides of him. He passed by a dead kid (young goat) with very small ears; he took hold of it by its ear and said: "Which of you would like to have this for a dirham?" They said: We would not like to have it for anything, and what would we do with it? He said: "Would you like it to be yours (for nothing)?" They said: By Allah, even if it were alive it would be defective because it has small ears (askk), so how about when it is dead! Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, this world is more insignificant to Allah than this is to you."
