Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8041

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Yemen, he said: O Messenger of Allah! Give me some advice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make your religion sincere (free of showing off), and even a little deed will suffice you (for salvation)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word here has been distorted into "Hurr".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Imam al-Hakim's "al-Mustadrak" it occurs thus as "al-Walid bin 'Imran", and this is also what Imam al-Bayhaqi reported in "Shu'ab al-Iman" via Imam al-Hakim himself; but this is an error in Imam al-Hakim's narration, because there is no biographical entry for any narrator named "al-Walid" of this description, and it also contradicts all the other source works, in which this narrator's name is given as "Khalid bin Abi 'Imran".

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have the words "The Messenger of Allah said to me", which does not make sense (since the narrator is a Successor). So the text established from the other source works has been recorded here.

Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ubayd Allah bin Zahr is a da'if narrator, and 'Amr bin Murrah al-Jamali did not live in the time of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) (there is a break). Imam al-Dhahabi, in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", rejected Imam al-Hakim's grading of this narration as sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6444) via Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): After it, Imam al-Bayhaqi said about 'Amr bin Murrah that he is the "Kufan" narrator, who was not a Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not meet Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him); therefore this hadith is "mursal". And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir" (4/1099), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/244), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6443) and Qawwam al-Sunnah in "al-Targhib wal-Tarhib" (99), through various routes from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): After it, Imam al-Bayhaqi said that this 'Amr bin Murrah is "al-Juhani", as our shaykh Abu 'Abd Allah (al-Hakim) said; he meant the 'Amr bin Murrah who was a Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) (so that the break would be removed, but this is open to question).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Daylami narrated it, as found in Ibn Hajar's "al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah" (154), through al-Nadr bin 'Abd al-Jabbar, who said: Ibrahim bin Khalid bin Abi 'Imran narrated to us, with the chain 'Amr bin Murrah from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here "Ibrahim bin Khalid" occurs in the chain, for whom we found no biographical entry, and even if it is "Ibrahim from Khalid", we still do not know this Ibrahim. In our view there is some error in this chain. And Allah knows best.
