It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us, he commanded us in it to give charity and forbade us from "muthlah" (cutting off or disfiguring the body). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Indeed, piercing the nose (of an animal or a person) is also part of muthlah, and a man's vowing that he will perform Hajj on foot is also muthlah (putting the body to needless hardship). So whoever has vowed to perform Hajj on foot, let him slaughter a sacrificial animal (hady) and go (for Hajj) riding."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In manuscript (B) the word here has been distorted into "al-Zubayr".
Grading: This hadith is sahih except for the words: "Among mutilation (muthlah) is" and what follows. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is da'if, because Abu 'Amir al-Khazzaz (whose name is Salih bin Rustum) and Kathir bin Shinzir have both been criticised, and the two of them are alone in reporting from al-Hasan al-Basri the words: "Among mutilation (muthlah: cutting off or disfiguring limbs) is that the nose be pierced" and what follows. A group of thiqah narrators narrated it from al-Hasan al-Basri but did not mention these words. Moreover, al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from 'Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established. When Qatadah narrated it from al-Hasan al-Basri, he mentioned "Hayyaj bin 'Imran" as an intermediary between them, as will come, but his narration also does not contain the words mentioned. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/19857 and 19939) narrated it through Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19858, 19877, 19950, 19996) and Imam Ibn Hibban (4473, 5616) narrated it through various routes from al-Hasan al-Basri, and the words "Among mutilation is" and what follows are not in them. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qatadah contradicted them (the previous narrators) and narrated it with the chain al-Hasan al-Basri from Hayyaj bin 'Imran from 'Imran and Samurah bin Jundub. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19844, 19846, 19847) and Abu Dawud (2667) narrated it through Qatadah. Details of the narration: He mentioned it without the words about "muthlah", and a story is also mentioned in it. Hayyaj bin 'Imran was declared thiqah by Ibn Sa'd and mentioned by Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat", whereas Imam 'Ali bin al-Madini called him "majhul" (unknown), because no one but al-Hasan al-Basri narrated from him. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19909) narrated it through Abu Qilabah from Samurah bin Jundub and 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah (whose name is 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi) is not established to have heard from either Samurah or 'Imran (the chain is munqati'). (8023). Important point: In this connection, see the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that has already passed at no. (8023). Grading: The prohibition of muthlah (mutilation) is established as sahih from the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Ansari, which is found in Imam al-Bukhari (2474). Reference / Source: Further, see the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in "Musnad Ahmad" (8/4622); the other hadiths of this chapter are also there. Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "yakhzimu anfahu" are with the letter za', and its literal meaning is "to make a hole in the nose, or pierce the nose".
