Tamim al-Ta'i narrates that a man came to Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I have married a woman, so give me (some help). He offered to write him an order for a coat of mail and a helmet, but the man was displeased with it, whereupon Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) swore that he would not give them to him. The man said: I was hoping you would give me a servant. He said: By Allah, these two are dearer to me than two servants. The man said: Then write me an order for them. Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "If one of you swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better," I would not have given them to you; then he wrote the order for them for him.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Al-Shaybani means Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1651/ 17) narrated it by the route of Muhammad bin Fudayl via Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman al-Shaybani with this same chain. What is between the square brackets is taken from it. Important point: Al-Hakim's "istidrak" on this hadith (i.e. including it in his book as an addition on the grounds that it is not in Muslim) is a slip and oversight (dhuhul) on his part, since it is found in Muslim. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (30/ 18257, 18273), Muslim (1651/ 15-17), Ibn Majah (2108), al-Nasa'i (4710, 4711) and Ibn Hibban (4345, 4346) narrated it, complete and abridged, by various routes of Abd al-Aziz bin Rufay'. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (18244, 18265) and Muslim (1651/ 18) narrated it by the route of Simak bin Harb from Tamim bin Tarafah, containing only the marfu' part without the story. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (30/ 18251 and 32/ 19380) and al-Nasa'i (4709) narrated it by the route of Abdullah bin Amr (the freedman of al-Hasan bin Ali) from Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), only as marfu', without the story.
