Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8012

حدثنا أبو العباس قاسم بن القاسم السَّيَّاري بمَرْو، حدثنا إبراهيم بن هِلال البُوزَنْجِرْدي، حدثنا علي بن الحسن بن شَقيق، أخبرنا الحُسين بن واقد، حدثنا عبد الله بن بُرَيدة، عن أبيه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "مَن قال: أنا بريءٌ من الإسلام، فإن كان كاذبًا فهو كما قالَ، وإن كان صادقًا فلن يَرجِعَ إلى الإسلام سالمًا" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says, 'I am free of Islam', then if he is lying, he is as he said; and if he is truthful (in his claim), he will never return to Islam safe and sound."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: The hadith is qawi (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "hasan" on account of Ibrahim bin Hilal, and he has also been corroborated.
وأخرجه أحمد 38/ (23006) و (23010)، وأبو داود (3258)، وابن ماجه (2100)، والنسائي (4695) من طرق عن الحسين بن واقد، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/ 23006 and 23010), Abu Dawud (3258), Ibn Majah (2100) and al-Nasa'i (4695) narrated it by various routes of al-Husayn bin Waqid with this same chain.
وفي الباب عن ثابت بن الضحاك عند البخاري (1363) ومسلم (110) مرفوعًا: "من حلف بمِلّة غير الإسلام كاذبًا متعمدًا فهو كما قال".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a marfu' narration from Thabit bin al-Dahhak (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari (1363) and Sahih Muslim (110): "Whoever deliberately swears falsely by a religion other than Islam, he is as he said."
