Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8009

It is narrated from Sayyidah Qutaylah bint Sayfi (may Allah be pleased with her), a woman of the tribe of Juhaynah, that a Jewish scholar (habr) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: You people also commit shirk. You say: 'Ma sha'a Allahu wa shi'ta' (What Allah wills and what you (peace and blessings be upon him) will), and you swear 'by the Ka'bah'. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the Companions): 'Ma sha'a Allahu thumma shi'ta' "Say it this way: What Allah wills, then what you will; and if you must swear, say: By the Lord of the Ka'bah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word "Abu" was distorted and mistakenly written as "bin".

Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah. Although the narrator al-Mas'udi (Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah) suffered from "ikhtilat" (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life, this hadith was narrated from him before his ikhtilat, and he has also been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at length (45/ 27093) by the route of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan via al-Mas'udi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan is among the narrators who heard hadiths from al-Mas'udi before his ikhtilat (deterioration of memory).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it (4696 and 10756) by the route of Mis'ar bin Kidam via Ma'bad bin Khalid.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i also narrated it (10757) by the route of al-Mughirah bin Miqsam, who transmitted it from Ma'bad bin Khalid from Qutaylah, but dropped the name of Abdullah bin Yasar from this chain.
Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi says in "al-Ilal al-Kabir" (457): I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il (al-Bukhari) about this hadith, and he said: Ma'bad bin Khalid narrated it in this way, via Abdullah bin Yasar from Qutaylah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir narrated it via Abdullah bin Yasar from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam al-Bukhari says that in his view this narration of Mansur is more likely and more correct.
Reference / Source: For the details of Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir's route see "Musnad Ahmad" (38/ 23265).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni differed from Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Ilal" (4112) and said that closest to being correct is the hadith of Qutaylah as narrated by Mis'ar and al-Mas'udi via Ma'bad bin Khalid.
