Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8007

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has permitted me to tell you about a (gigantic) rooster whose feet are on the earth and whose neck is bent beneath the Throne. It says (in glorification): 'Subhanaka, ma a'zama rabbana!' (O Allah, You are free of all imperfection; how great is our Lord!) Then Allah Almighty replies: The one who swears falsely by Me does not know this (My greatness)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the name here was distorted and mistakenly written as "Abdullah".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are on the whole thiqah, but concerning Mu'awiyah bin Ishaq (bin Talhah al-Taymi), although the majority held a good opinion of him, Imam Abu Zur'ah called him "shaykhun wahin" (a very weak shaykh) in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (8/ 381), which is severe criticism.
Important point: Among the students of Sa'id al-Maqburi he is alone in narrating this unusual (gharib) text, and there is also disagreement over its text, as will be mentioned below.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (7324) and Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Azamah" (524 and 1248) by the route of al-Fadl bin Sahl al-A'raj from Ishaq bin Mansur al-Saluli from Isra'il al-Sabi'i with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amr al-Naqid contradicted al-Fadl bin Sahl in the text; he narrated it from Ishaq bin Mansur al-Saluli (in al-Darimi's "al-Radd ala al-Marisi" 1/ 478 and Abu Ya'la 6619) (although Isra'il's name has dropped out of al-Darimi's chain).
Details of the narration: Its wording is: "Allah has permitted me to tell you about an angel whose feet have passed through the seventh earth, with the Throne upon his shoulder, and he is saying: 'Glory be to You, where are You? (or: wherever You are)'."
Important point: In this narration an angel is mentioned instead of the rooster (dik), and he is described as one of the bearers of the Throne; moreover, it does not contain the point of evidence relating to the false oath (namely: "The one who swears falsely by Me does not know this").
Note / Clarification: Several hadiths are narrated about the rooster (dik) in Abu al-Shaykh's "al-Azamah" (3/ 1002-1009) and elsewhere, without the story of the false oath, but none of them is sahih, and some are severely weak.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts there was a distortion here and the name was mistakenly written as "al-Ataki".
