Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7986

It is narrated from a radif of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (a Companion who rode behind him on his mount) that once his mount stumbled and fell, and he said: "May Satan perish (ta'isa al-shaytan)!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say 'May Satan perish', for when you say that, he swells up with pride and says: 'I brought him down by my strength.' Rather, in such a situation say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), for when you mention the name of Allah, he is humbled and shrinks until he becomes as small as a fly."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this was distorted here and written as "Khalid bin Abi Tamimah".

Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators are thiqah, but there is disagreement in the narration from Abu Tamimah (Tarif bin Mujalid): sometimes he narrates it directly from the radif (the Companion riding behind) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and sometimes through an intermediary. In some narrations this intermediary is named "Abu al-Malih" (Ibn Usamah al-Hudhali), who is a thiqah narrator of the two Sahihs.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (4982) narrated it by the route of Khalid bin Abdullah al-Wasiti, and Imam al-Nasa'i (4982) by the route of Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, via Khalid al-Hadhdha'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi (in Sunan al-Nasa'i: 10314) contradicted both of them and narrated it via Khalid al-Hadhdha' from Abu Tamimah from Abu al-Malih, that a man was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he related it as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (34/ 20591) by the route of Ma'mar, (20592 and 20690) by the route of Shu'bah, and (38/ 230921) by the route of Sufyan al-Thawri; all three transmit it via Asim al-Ahwal from Abu Tamimah from the radif (the Companion riding behind) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'bah says that Asim said either "from Abu Tamimah" or "from Abu Tamimah from a man from the radif of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)". Sufyan al-Thawri also mentioned, with doubt, the words "or via a man".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Humran (who is layyin al-hadith) contradicted all of them and, taking the "well-trodden path" (the common, familiar route), narrated it via Abu Tamimah from Abu al-Malih from his father Usamah; that is, he named Abu al-Malih's father (Usamah bin Umayr) as the Companion, because Abu al-Malih narrates frequently from his father.
Important point: Imam al-Nasa'i says that in his view this is a mistake, and he declared correct the narration of Ibn al-Mubarak (which has already passed), and Khalid al-Wasiti corroborated him in it.
