It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Companions were gathered around him. The people hesitated somewhat to give up their places (because of the lack of space), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took up his (blessed) cloak and tossed it to him. Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) pressed it to his chest and face, kissed it and placed it on his eyes, and then said: May Allah honour you as you have honoured me. Then he placed the cloak back on the (blessed) back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), whereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, when the honoured man of a people comes to him, let him honour him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was distorted and written as "Amr".
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name became "Sa'id"; in al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" it is recorded correctly.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) there was a blank space here, while manuscript (M) and "al-Talkhis" have the words "fa-akrimuhu" (honour him), but the word "qawm" is missing. We have established it from the reliable sources.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ma'bad bin Khalid and his father are both majhul (unknown). Al-Hakim is alone in making this narration a hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas what is well known is that it is the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), Ma'bad's grandfather. Reference / Source: Abu al-Abbas al-Sarraj (Siyar A'lam al-Nubala': 2/ 532), al-Khara'iti (726), Abu al-Shaykh (149), al-Bayhaqi (10488), Qiwam al-Sunnah (192) and Qadi al-Maristan (652) narrated it by various routes via Hafs bin Ghiyath from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). With al-Sarraj and Abu al-Shaykh this narration is abridged. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic we have mentioned narrations from a group of Companions under Sunan Ibn Majah (3712), but they are all weak. Grading: The most sound narration on this subject is the "mursal" of al-Sha'bi, found in Abu Dawud's "al-Marasil" (511), and all its narrators are thiqah. Important point: Al-Hafiz al-Sakhawi, after setting out its various routes in "al-Maqasid al-Hasanah" (p. 34), says: Although its individual routes are weak, by the combination of all these routes the hadith becomes strong.
