Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7987

Abu al-Malih bin Usamah narrates from his father (Usamah bin Malik): I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his mount when our camel stumbled and fell. I said: "May Satan perish!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Do not say 'May Satan perish', for with that he grows arrogant until he becomes as big as a house and considers himself powerful. Rather, say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), for when you say Bismillah he becomes so insignificant that he is left the size of a fly."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith itself is sahih, but this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Muhammad bin Humran is "layyin al-hadith" (weak), and taking the familiar route (the "well-trodden path") he named Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) as the Companion.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (10313) narrated it by the route of Ahmad bin Abdah with this same chain of Muhammad bin Humran, and said: "In my view this is a mistake."
