It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a naked sword (drawn out of its sheath) be handed from one person to another.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban narrated it by various routes of Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain; Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib". Details of the narration: It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some people who were handing an unsheathed sword to one another, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did I not forbid you from this? Let him first sheathe it, then hand it to his brother." Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14980) narrated it with a similar meaning by the route of Sulayman bin Musa from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is munqati' (broken), because Sulayman bin Musa al-Ashdaq did not hear anything directly from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14742) narrated it by the route of Ibn Lahi'ah, via Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), from Bunnah (or Nubayh) al-Juhani, as marfu'. Technical note / Defect ('illah): If Ibn Lahi'ah remembered it correctly (though his memory was poor), then it would be a narration of "a Companion from a Companion", and the first narration would then count as a "mursal of a Companion". For further details see Musnad Ahmad. Note / Clarification: "Maslulan" means (a sword) drawn out of its sheath, bare.
