It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of a house that is called 'al-hammam' (the public bathhouse)." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, it removes dirt and benefits the sick. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then whoever enters it, let him cover himself (his private parts)."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in its narrators, but Muhammad bin Ishaq (bin Yasar) is a mudallis and did not explicitly state that he heard it; moreover, the narrator who corroborates him is weak and cannot serve as proof.
Grading: What is "mahfuz" (the preserved, most correct version) in this hadith is that it is narrated from Tawus as "mursal", as Abu Hatim mentioned in "al-Ilal" (2209).
Note / Clarification: The narrators' full names are: Abdullah bin al-Hasan bin Ahmad bin Abi Shu'ayb, Abd al-Aziz bin Yahya bin Yusuf, Muhammad bin Salamah bin Abdullah al-Harrani, and Ibn Tawus means Abdullah bin Tawus.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (10932) from Ahmad bin Ali al-Abbar, and by his route Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (193); and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (11/ 62) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7375) by the route of Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Abdi. Both of them transmit it from Abd al-Aziz bin Yahya with this same chain; however, in al-Tabarani's narration there is no mention of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani.
Reference / Source: Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi narrated it in "Nawadir al-Usul" (754), al-Tabarani (10926), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (7/ 222), Abu Nu'aym (194) and al-Bayhaqi (7378), by the route of Yahya bin Uthman al-Taymi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya al-Taymi is a weak narrator, "munkar al-hadith".
Grading: Imam al-Bayhaqi (7376) narrated it by the route of Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, as "mursal". Imam al-Bayhaqi says that this is the "mahfuz" version, meaning that from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani the correct transmission is mursal, not connected.
Reference / Source: Al-Fakihi narrated it in "Akhbar Makkah" (1858) and al-Bayhaqi (7377) by the route of Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Ibn Tawus, as "mursal". Likewise Abd al-Razzaq (1117), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/ 309) via Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as mursal too.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bayhaqi says that the majority of narrators transmitted it from Sufyan al-Thawri as "mursal". Likewise Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, Sufyan bin Uyaynah, Rawh bin al-Qasim and others transmitted it from Ibn Tawus as mursal. Imam Abu Hatim says in "al-Ilal" that they only narrate it from Tawus from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'la bin Ubayd contradicted the majority and narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, via Ibn Tawus, with mention of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), as "mawsul" (connected).
Reference / Source: This connected narration was narrated by al-Bazzar (4888), Abu Tahir in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1202) and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (7/ 309).
