Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7967

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out on his mount, and the Companions were walking ahead of him. Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Prophet of Allah! Do you permit me to come close to you and go forward, with a glad heart? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Mu'adh came close, and the two of them went along together. Mu'adh said: May my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! I ask Allah to make our death come before your passing. (Allah forbid) if we have to remain after you, which deeds should we do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, then said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." Then he said: "Jihad is an excellent thing, but there is something that gives people even more control than that." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is it fasting and charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting and charity are excellent things." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned every good deed that a person does, and each time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is something better than that for people." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, what is that thing? He (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his mouth and said: "Silence, except from good." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Will we be held to account even for what our tongues speak? He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck the thigh of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Mu'adh! May your mother lose you (this is an Arabic idiom). Will people be thrown on their faces into Hell for anything other than the harvest of their tongues (evil speech)?! So whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or keep silent from evil. Speak good and you will gain; keep silent from evil and you will be safe."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Imam al-Hakim says that this establishes the permissibility of a student supplicating for his teacher that "I should die before you", for I have already presented before this sahih (authentic) narrations establishing the permissibility of people saying "May Allah make me your ransom" ("Ja'alaniya Allahu fidak").

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: It is recorded thus in the manuscripts, but in al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Mukhtarah", by way of Imam al-Tabarani, the word is "wa 'ad", and likewise in "Majma' al-Zawa'id", which appears to be the standard reading. According to the context, "wa 'adu bi al-nas" means "something among the people". In al-Jawhari's "al-Sihah" and in "Lisan al-'Arab", under the root ('-w-d), it is mentioned that the expression is used: "I do not know which 'ad he is" (as a diptote), i.e. which person or which creature he is.

Note / Clarification: This word has been added from "al-Mukhtarah", because the context of the passage requires it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated this narration in "Khalq Af'al al-'Ibad" (293), al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (8/ 405) by way of Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri, and al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (666) by way of Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Wahb, in abridged and detailed form. Both of these Ahmads narrate it via 'Abdullah bin Wahb with this same chain.
Important point: A similar narration has already passed from the hadith of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) himself under number (3590).
