Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7935

Masruq narrates that he said: I came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked: What is your name? I said: Masruq. He asked: Whose son are you? I said: Ibn al-Ajda'. He said: You are "Masruq bin Abd al-Rahman". The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that "al-Ajda'" is the name of a devil. So his name was recorded in the official register (diwan) as Masruq bin Abd al-Rahman.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words between square brackets were not present in the manuscripts; we have established them from 'Allamah al-Dhahabi's book "al-Talkhis", and this agrees with the other sources of takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of "Mujalid bin Sa'id al-Hamdani".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 1/ (211), Abu Dawud (4957) and Ibn Majah (3731) narrated it via Abu 'Aqil 'Abdullah bin 'Aqil, from Mujalid bin Sa'id, with this same chain.
