Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7933

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged Ta'if, I let myself down (from the fortress) by means of a pulley (bakrah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: How did you do this? I said: I came down by means of a "bakrah". So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Abu Bakrah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: By virtue of its two routes, this narration has the possibility of being "hasan". There is no harm in the narrators of this chain except 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah al-Bakrawi, whose biography I could not find, but this narration of his is from his own family, and in such a case there is the possibility of accepting the narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (3684), Ibn Abi 'Asim (1562) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 62/ 210 narrated it through the chain of Abu Qutaybah Salm bin Qutaybah from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah. Imam al-Bazzar says: "We know this hadith from Abu Bakrah only through this route, and we know of no one who heard from Abu al-Minhal except Abu Qutaybah, who narrated two hadiths from him."
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Sunni narrated it in "'Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (407) through the chain of 'Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an) from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah from his father.
Grading: Its chain is weak on account of Ibn Jud'an; moreover, its chain includes Sufyan bin Waki', who is himself weak.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (4326) narrated from Abu 'Uthman al-Nahdi that he said: I heard Sa'd (who was the first to shoot an arrow in the path of Allah) and Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with them); Abu Bakrah is the one who, together with some people, climbed over the wall of the fortress of Ta'if and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then he mentioned the hadith.
Note / Clarification: Al-Baladhuri mentioned in "Ansab al-Ashraf" 1/ 490: Some of the family of Abu Bakrah told me that he let himself down from the fortress by means of a pulley (bakrah) (and it is for this reason that he came to be called Abu Bakrah).
