Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him): How fine a man you would be, were it not for three traits (needing correction) in you. He asked: What are they? He said: You have taken a kunyah even though you have no children; you ascribe yourself to the Arabs although you are a Roman; and you are very extravagant in food. He replied: O Commander of the Believers! As for your first point, that I took a kunyah without having children, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself gave me the kunyah "Abu Yahya". As for your saying that I ascribe myself to the Arabs, the truth is that I am a member of the tribe of al-Namir bin Qasit; I was taken captive from Mosul in my childhood, when I already knew my family and lineage. And as for your saying that I am extravagant in food, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best of you is the one who feeds others."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain has some weakness (lin) on account of 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, and he is alone in the marfu' part of this report. The rest of it is reported through other routes, as has passed under hadith number (5806). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 39/ (23929) narrated it in abridged form through the chain of Zakariyya bin 'Adi from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Amr. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (23926) by way of Zuhayr bin Muhammad, from 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, from Hamzah bin Suhayb, that the kunyah of Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) was "Abu Yahya", and he mentioned other similar details. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3738) narrated it in abridged form by way of Zuhayr bin Muhammad, that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Suhayb: Why is it that your kunyah is "Abu Yahya" although you have no child (by that name)? He replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me this kunyah. 39 (23784). Note / Clarification: In the chapter on the virtue of feeding people, the narrations of Abu Hurayrah and 'Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with them) can be seen, with their takhrij, in "Musnad Ahmad" 13/ (7932) and 39/ (23784).
