It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to order that, behind the imam, one should recite Surah al-Fatihah and a surah in the first two rak'ahs, and only Surah al-Fatihah in the last two rak'ahs.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Sufyan bin Husayn is considered weak in his narration from al-Zuhri, here Ma'mar has corroborated him. Saying "Ibn Abi Rafi' from his father from Ali" in this narration is an error either by Sufyan or by a narrator below him; the correct version is that it is the narration of "Ibn Abi Rafi'" (i.e. Ubayd Allah) directly from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (Ubayd Allah was Ali's scribe).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in 'al-Qira'ah Khalf al-Imam' (194-195) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in 'al-Qira'ah Khalf al-Imam' (54), al-Tahawi in 'Ma'ani al-Athar' (1/209), and al-Daraqutni (1229, 1231), via various routes from Shu'bah.
Important point: In al-Bukhari's narration the words "from his father" have dropped out, which is correct.
Important point: Likewise Yazid bin Harun narrated it correctly from Sufyan bin Husayn without the words "from his father", as found in al-Bayhaqi's 'al-Sunan al-Kubra' (2/168) and 'al-Qira'ah Khalf al-Imam' (225).
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (1232) and al-Bayhaqi in 'al-Sunan' (2/168) narrated it through the chain Ma'mar from al-Zuhri from Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi' from Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it (in his 'Musannaf' 1/370) through Abd al-A'la al-Sami from "his paternal uncle", but the strong likelihood is that this is a corruption (tahrif) of "Ma'mar", because no narration of Abd al-A'la from his paternal uncle is known. Al-Bayhaqi referred to this narration of Abd al-A'la as being from Ma'mar, and declared it sahih, preferring it over Shu'bah's narration containing "from his father".
