It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to make this announcement among the people: "There is no prayer without reciting Surah al-Fatihah and something more (of the Qur'an)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) and there is no doubt about it, because Ja'far bin Maymun is among the trustworthy narrators of Basrah, and Yahya bin Sa'id narrates only from trustworthy narrators. Furthermore, the command to recite behind the imam is also established from Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because of Ja'far bin Maymun, this chain is regarded as "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports; he has some weakness, but his narration is taken into consideration. Important point: Al-Hakim's unqualified declaration of him as trustworthy is "tasahul" (leniency) on his part. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 15/(9529) and Abu Dawud in (820) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (819) and Ibn Hibban (1791) narrated it via Isa bin Yunus from Ja'far bin Maymun. Technical note / Defect ('illah): With Abu Dawud its wording is: "There is no prayer except with Qur'an, even if only the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah) and whatever is more", and with this wording the narration is weak. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: As a supporting report for the wording found with the author (al-Hakim) and others, there is the hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit, narrated by Muslim (394/37), Abu Dawud (822), Ahmad (37/22749) and others. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) is also a supporting report, narrated by Ahmad (17/10998), Abu Dawud (818) and others.
