Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Buraydah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade two ways of sitting and two ways of dressing. As for the two ways of sitting: (one is) sitting between the shade and the sun, and the other is sitting in ihtiba' (drawing the knees up to the stomach and binding them with the hands or a cloth) in such a way that there is a risk of the private parts being exposed. The two ways of dressing are: one, that you pray in a single garment without doing tawashshuh with it (throwing one end over the opposite shoulder), and the other, that you pray in trousers alone with no upper wrap (rida') over you.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts, due to distortion (error), this name was written as "'Abd Allah" (in the non-diminutive form, mukabbar) (whereas the original name was 'Ubayd Allah).
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on the basis of supporting narrations (corroborating chains and supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain being (only) hasan is because of Abu al-Munib al-'Ataki. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/ 486) narrated it, and by way of him Ibn Majah (3722) transmitted it with the chain Zayd bin al-Hubab, from Abu al-Munib al-'Ataki. Details of the narration: The narration of Ibn Majah is abridged, mentioning only the prohibition of sitting between the sun and the shade. (834). Reference / Source: This hadith has also passed earlier in abridged form at no. (834). (7903). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the prohibition of sitting between the sun and the shade, see the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that has passed earlier at no. (7903). (2099). General principle: "Ihtiba'" (sitting with the knees drawn up to the stomach and a garment wrapped around them) is forbidden in a garment in which there is a risk of exposing the 'awrah. Reference / Source: This prohibition is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in al-Bukhari (367), from Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (584), and from Jabir in Muslim (2099). (518). Reference / Source: On the topic of wrapping a single garment around the body (tawashshuh), the narration of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in al-Bukhari (370) and Muslim (518). Grading: Sahih. Reference / Source: Regarding the prohibition of keeping the shoulders uncovered in prayer, it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (359), with these words: "None of you should pray in a single garment in such a way that there is nothing on his shoulders." Note / Clarification: Our finding is that this ruling applies when the garment is wide; but if the garment is narrow, he should tie it as a waist-wrapper and there is no sin on him, as in the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (361): "If the garment is wide, wrap yourself in it, and if it is narrow, tie it as a waist-wrapper."
