Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7901

Qays al-Ghifari narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were in the Suffah after Maghrib when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "O so-and-so, go with so-and-so; and O so-and-so, go with so-and-so," until I remained as the fifth of five (who had not been sent with anyone). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come with me." So we went with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her); this was before the commands of hijab were revealed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah, feed us," and she brought jashishah (a dish of coarsely ground grain). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah, feed us (more)," and she brought hays (a mixture of dates, ghee and dried curd), a small amount about the size of a bird. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah, give us something to drink," and she brought a large bowl ('uss) of milk or drink. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, sleep here with us, and if you wish, go back to the mosque and sleep there." The narrator said: We slept in the mosque. In the last part of the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and found me sleeping on my stomach; he (peace and blessings be upon him) stirred me with his foot and said: "What kind of sleep is this of yours? This is a posture that Allah dislikes - or he said: that Allah detests."
There is disagreement from Yahya bin Abi Kathir in the narration of its chain, and the final conclusion is that the correct name is Qays bin Tikhfah al-Ghifari; and the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is a supporting witness (shahid) for it.

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.

Grading: This is a "hasan hadith" because of Qays al-Ghifari (a Successor).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement among the imams in many respects about the name of this narrator himself and the name of his father, as Imam al-Bukhari mentioned in detail in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 365 - 366) and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Isabah" in the biography of Tihfah (or Tikhfah).
Important point: Since Qays is a well-known Successor and a large group of narrators transmitted from him, Imam Ibn Hibban declared his hadith sahih for this reason.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin al-Sabbah contradicted the above-mentioned narrators (Mahmud bin Khalid and Duhaym); thus Imam Ibn Majah (3723) narrated it through his route, in the chain al-Walid bin Muslim, from al-Awza'i, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, with the words "Qays bin Tihfah al-Ghifari, from his father".
